EDU 125 - BLOG B

Public Law 94-142 was passed in1975 by the Congress and President Ford. During the 1970’s parents and other professionals were not satisfied with the services offered to students with disabilities. These individuals wanted action by Congress and soon, The Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142) came about. It is the purpose of this Act to guarantee that all handicapped children have available to them a free appropriate public education that highlights special education and related services created to meet their individual needs and to assure that the rights of handicapped children and their parents or guardians are protected. The law assists states and districts to provide for the education of all handicapped children and to assess and assure the successfulness of efforts to educate handicapped children. For those with disabilities, this act was the most complete and important law to date in the United States. This law made it possible for states and local schools to receive federal funds in order to help in the education of students with disabilities. Public Law 94-142 brought together many pieces of state and federal legislation into a solitary, national law. This law is considered to be a landmark in legislation for special education. The law forced schools to take affirmative action in the education of their students with disabilities. They had to take specific actions to educate these individual students and in return they would receive financial help specifically designated for education the handicapped students of the school. Public Law 94-142 mandated a free, appropriate education (FAPE) for handicapped children and adults ages three to twenty-one with related services for students with disabilities. Students were now to be educated with children who are not handicapped and special classes, separate schools, and other removals from the regular education environment was only to occur when the severity of the handicap is such that education in a regular classroom can not be achieved. This meaning that the student is to be educated in the “least restrictive environment”. The law also mandated a nondiscriminatory, comprehensive evaluation prior to special education placements and a periodic reevaluation. The extensive evaluation taken place before a child is accepted into the special education program consists of a large amount of criteria needing to be met. How the student’s handicap or mental disability affects their learning is a major factor considered. Each student who meets the requirements for special education services is provided an individual education program (IEP). The IEP specifies the goals and objectives for the student. When a child is placed in the special education program with an IEP the parent(s) of the child should also be provided training, free of charge, to enable them to play a role in the effective meeting of the needs of their child. Also provided in the law are specified procedural safeguards to protect the rights of parents and students. All in all Public Law 94-142 dramatically and permanently changes the delivery of services to students with disabilities. This law is now called IDEA.

Today students with handicaps are integrated into the classroom yet, depending on their individual needs, are also provided teaching out of the regular classroom setting. Public Law 94-142 brought about more services available to these students with handicaps and made it so that students were educated in the least restrictive environment. Today it is still evident that students with handicapped are taught with students who are not yet are provided many other opportunities for them to learn. Public Law 94-142 brought this about and it still holds strong today along with the No Child Left Behind Act.

EDU 125 - BLOG A

I have learned a lot of things throughout my life. Many of the things I have learned have not been taught to me by a parent, teacher, or authority figure. These many of things have been my informal education that I have learned through experience rather than a teaching. I have experience many things throughout my life thus far and I believe that every experience has an impact on me and some type of learning is given that will last a lifetime. As a cheerleader for twelve years of my life I learned many things on my own just from experiencing the day-to-day work involved in the sport. By observing my mother and fathers relationship I have learned what, to me, is a good relationship. As a student I have learned, from experience, that hard work does pay off in the long run. Through these three experiences and many more, learning has been produced. Not by a teacher or adult, but by myself just experiencing, observing, and analyzing.

I was a cheerleader for twelve years. Through this sport I learned a lot. Not only did I learn the proper techniques I needed to know to be successful at the sport but I also learned the importance of teamwork and the impact this has on a group. I grew up through my younger years enjoying the sport with groups of girls and boys who had a heart for the sport just as much as I did. They prided themselves on friendship within the team. As soon as I entered high school, I noticed and experienced a whole new outlook and feeling. I did not feel comfortable cheering for my high school throughout my first year. The team was very separated and not bonded. This attitude reflected throughout our routine when stunts began to fall and no one was in sync. Through this observation of the differences of the two teams I was a part of I realized how important teamwork and communication was. Without these aspects a team is not a real team in the sense of containing friendships and overall, fun.

My mother and father have one of the strongest relationships I have ever encountered. Their respect for one another is untouchable. They treat each other with the up most love and respect and when they get into little arguments they are sure to not let it get in the way of their love for one another. I have grown up with both of my parents playing a very large role in my life. My mother has always been they’re to help me with schoolwork and my petty life problems and my father has always been their lovingly pushing me to succeed in all that I do. I am very lucky to have both of them in my life, together. Their relationship has taught me what love is and that love that strong between a male and female exists. They inspired me to love. To love life, myself, and other people who will come in and out of my life. I have learned to love and how to love through having them as a part of my life.

I have always been an average and above average student. I have younger siblings who are average and below average when it comes to these tasks at school. When grades are received at our household my parents expect the perfect grades from me and less from my younger siblings. This has always set a high standard for me that I had to reach and stay at. Because this high standard was set for me I always felt as though I needed to stay at it in order to keep my parents happy. When I got my first C in high school, I felt terrible. My parents were disappointed and I was disappointed because they were. After this experience I learned that perfection is not everything and perfection will not help me to succeed. I am not here at UMF this year as a first year because I got that C. I am here because I am a good student. The experience of getting a lower grade than usual showed me that perfection won’t get me to where I want to go in life. The imperfections I make are what I learn from. This imperfection taught me not to give up. I never gave up after getting that C. I kept going and now I am here at UMF.

I feel that my informal education curriculum has affected me more as a person than my formal education. Through many experiences I have learned to be a better person. These informal learnings will continue throughout my life and I know that they all will impact me in some way or another and that these learnings will make me a fuller person.
